Zack Snyderhas landed on what will be his next film, and it’s a passion project that he has been trying to get in front of the cameras for quite some time. With financing finally secured and leads in place, Snyder will step out of the world of action and sci-fi and into a war drama that will shoot in several locations across the globe.
PerDeadline, Snyder’s next film will beThe Last Photograph, a war drama that he has been trying to get off the ground since the mid-2000s. The director recently secured financing for the project and, with that task out of the way, he also set the two leads for the film. He willreunite with hisRebel Moonactors, Stuart Martin and Fra Fee, with shooting scheduled to begin this month and last through November. The war drama is based on a globetrotting affair that is expected to shoot in Iceland, Colombia and Los Angeles. Snyder take on directing duties and will also get a story-by credit to go alongside Kurt Johnstad’s screenplay. Based on Snyder’s own words, this is likely going to be a very personal project for the director.

“The idea of taking camera in hand and simply making a movie in an intimate way is very appealing to me. The Last Photograph is a meditation of life and death, embodying some of the trials that I have experienced in my own life and the exploration of those ideas through image making.”
What Is ‘The Last Photograph’ About?
According to the producers of the project, which includes Snyder, his wife Deborah, and Wesley Coller under their Stone Quarry banner, in addition to Gianni Nunnari’s Hollywood Gang Productions and co-producer Alisha Stickney,The Last Photographwill follow an ex-DEA operative who has to find hismissing niece and nephewafter their diplomat parents are brutally murdered. “Enlisting the help of a washed-up junkie war photographer, the only person to have seen the face of the killers, he sets out, determined to find the children and the truth, but soon learns he must also face the ghosts of his past. Their journey into the unknown takes them further away from civilization, bringing into question everything they believe, while slowly eroding the distinction between real and surreal.”

The project is being described as an indie that will have a budget much lower than what Snyder has been working with on his recent films. The director also has composers in line for the project, including Hans Zimmer, Steven Doar and Omer Benyamin. The Last Photographhas also gone through a series of changes over its 20-plus years of development, including once having Christian Bale and Sean Penn attached to the projectin the early 2010s.
