Back in August, we reported that the conviction ofMaking a MurderersubjectBrendan Dasseywas overturned by a federal judge in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The judge ordered that he would be freed within 90 days, unless the prosecutors would seek to re-try him. A judge ordered in federal court today that he would be set free, but the prosecution is already trying to stay that release order. Here’s what Northwestern University’s Center on Wrongful Convictions of Youth had to say in a statement revealing that they hope to bringBrendanback home for Thanksgiving.
“We are in the process of making arrangements for his release and hope that Brendan will be reunited with his family byThanksgiving, if not sooner. We urge everyone to respect Brendan’s privacy during this time of transition.”
TMJ4first broke the news that US Magistrate JudgeWilliam Duffingranted a motion for release in the Brendan Dassey case. Attorney General Brad Schimel intends to file an emergency motion in the Seventh Circuit seeking a stay of this release order. The judge also revealed during the hearing that as condition of his release,Brendan Dasseymust not have any contact withSteven Avery.
The judge also ordered thatBrendan Dasseyis only allowed to travel in the court’s Eastern District of Wisconsin, while ordering that he must not obtain a passport, and that he cannot possess a gun, any other weapons, or controlled substances. The court also ordered thatBrendan Dasseymust not have any contact with the family of murder victimTeresa Halbach.Steven Averystill remains in prison for the murder ofTeresa Halbach, but he toldDr. Philin an interview last month that he’s expecting to be released soon as well.
The first season ofMaking a Murdererwas released last December, on the same date that the box office blockbusterStar Wars: The Force Awakenshit theaters. The show was given aSeason 2 renewalby Netflix, with Executive Producers and DirectorsLaura RicciardiandMoira Demosalready in production on new episodes. Netflix hasn’t announced whenMaking a MurdererSeason 2 will debut quite yet.
