Can Miss Bala Break Through Glass at the Weekend Box Office?

January will officially be over once this weekend at the box office kicks in and, a couple of bright spots aside, it hasn’t been a month packed with hits. M. Night Shyamalan’sGlasswon its second weekend in a row with $18.8 million last week and, with the Super Bowl set for this Sunday, most studios are steering clear of this frame, with just one new release going wide in the form of the action/thrillerMiss Bala. With that, it looks to be a relatively quiet weekend overall, with some holdovers enjoying just a bit more success before the competition becomes more fierce.

Glasswill, in all likelihood, win the weekendbox officeagain with between $8 and $10 million, depending on how steep the drop off proves to be. The sequel to bothUnbreakableandSplithas divided critics, but many moviegoers seem to be enjoying what thrills the non-traditional superhero movie has to offer. As of this writing, the movie has grossed $166 million worldwide. Considering that $20 million budget (which M. Night Shyamalan put up himself), it’s proving to be a reasonably big hit.

It’s worth mentioning that it will probably be a pretty tight pack throughout the top ten this weekend, with several movies looking to possibly be very near one another, in terms of their weekend total, come Monday. That said,Miss Bala, the drug cartel actioner starringJane The Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez, looks to bring in between $6 and $10 million, per industry estimates. Expect to see it fall squarely in the middle, which would be a pretty decent start for the Catherine Hardwicke-directed flick, which comes with a budget of $15 million.

It will be a very tight race for the two and three spots betweenMiss BalaandThe Upside, which has enjoyed solid success over the last few weeks. The STX release should see somewhere between $6 and $8 million this weekend, which will help carry it near the $80 million worldwide mark. The combination of Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston has proved to be more popular than expected.

Rounding out the top five should be another tight race between recent Best Picture Oscar nomineeGreen Book, DC’sAquamanand Peter Jackson’s acclaimed WWI documentaryThey Shall Not Grow Old, which is getting a big expansion this weekend.Aquamanwill likely, by the skin of its teeth, miss out on the top five, withGreen Bookand Jackson’s latest landing in the four and five spots.

Also of note;Serenity, which arrived with a thud last weekend, will likely miss out on the top ten and Fox’sThe Kid Who Would Be Kingwill plummet and cement it as 2019’s first big bomb.
