It’s no secret that Cartoon Network gets a little wild during the wee hours of the night, playing raunchy andabsurdist adult-oriented showslikeRobot Chicken,Tim & Eric Awesome Show! Great Job,Moral Orel, andThe Eric Andre Show. The beloved cable channel’s adult programming block, known asAdult Swim, has hosted a wide range of simultaneously nonsensical and oddly profound series over the years, some more prominent than others. One particular parody medical show has stayed under the radar for far too long:Childrens Hospital.

If you’re a fan of satire, dark comedy, hospital procedurals, and/or clowns,Childrens Hospitalmay be your deranged cup of tea. From creator Rob Corddry, the four-time Emmy-winning short-form comedy series follows the savagely unprofessional surgeons, doctors, and nurses of a pediatric hospital — literally called Childrens Hospital, named after founder Dr. Arthur Childrens. With little care toward the minors they’re supposed to be treating, the only bedside manner these medical professionals prioritize is, well,in-bedmanner. They’re horny. They’re also the most self-absorbed, inappropriate, and incompetent medical staff members you’ll ever see in your life.

Mimicking the melodramatic opening credits and juicy staff romance storylines ofmedical dramas likeGrey’s AnatomyandER,Childrens Hospitalis a hilarious parody that colors outside the lines — heck, it colors completely off the page. A 2010Vanity Fairfeature described its silly brilliance perfectly: “It seems too good to be true, and we’re convinced that somebody with authority will find out and shut it down with extreme prejudice.” It goes on to highlight a few bonkers storylines, many of which feel uncomfy to even mention in 2025, including the “11-month old girl getting breast implants” bit. Hey, what’s funnier than medical malpractice?

Its daring silliness and meta vibes made it a cult hit, butChildrens Hospitalhas been hard to find in its entirety via streaming. In mid-April 2025, curious weirdos will finally be able to stream all seven seasons of the medical comedy on Prime Video. Keep reading for someCHlore.

‘Childrens Hospital’ Started as a Web Series Born Out of a Writers Guild Strike

Childrens Hospital

Childrens Hospital is a comedy series that parodies medical dramas, focusing on the chaotic lives and absurd antics of the eccentric hospital staff. Set in a busy healthcare facility, the show humorously explores the personal and professional challenges faced by its characters with irreverent wit and satire.

Aside from creator and star Rob Corddry — a former correspondent onThe Daily Show with Jon Stewart—Childrens Hospitalhosts a slew of comedy favorites as regulars, including Ken Marino, Rob Huebel, Megan Mullally, Lake Bell, Henry Winkler, Malin Akerman, Erinn Hayes, and Michael Cera (who’s primarily heard over the intercom). Recurring guest stars like Nick Offerman, Jon Hamm, Jordan Peele, Nick Kroll, David Wain, and Ed Helms also lent their comedy stylings to the series, which closed its privacy curtains in 2016 after seven seasons. But beforeChildrens Hospitalbecame an Emmy-winning cable show success, it was an internet comedy gem.

According toThe New York Times,CHwas originally a web series on thewb.com, an idea that was the lemonade of the lemony 2007-2008 Writers Guild strike. “I had leftThe Daily Showto doThe Winneron FOX; it had just been canceled, and the writers’ strike was on,” Rob Corddry toldWiredin 2016. “I was not making the money I had been making the last few years.”

The 15 Funniest Adult Swim Shows, Ranked

Adult Swim has been hijacking Cartoon Network for 22 years with some of the weirdest and most interesting shows on TV. Here are the funniest.

Writers were able to work on internet-based content, a strange state of affairs for entertainment at the time, and the unhinged medical comedy was born. Indeed, the show’s premise was also conceived in odd circumstances.

Metalocalypse, Check It Out! With Dr. Steve Brule, Aqua Teen Hunger Force

“My oldest daughter pulled her elbow out of socket, and I brought her to Children’s Hospital in L.A.,” Corddry continued. “If you’ve ever been to any children’s hospital, you know it’s the least funny place anywhere. On the ride home, the idea struck me to do a typical TV medical drama with beautiful people and sex and romance but set it in a really inappropriate place for that.”

At five minutes a pop, the 2008 web series just clicked. And despite insisting that a future TV show was never going to happen, Corddry developed the Adult Swim version alongside David Wain (Wet Hot American Summer) and Jonathan Stern (A Futile and Stupid Gesture). It premiered in 2010 after Comedy Central lost to Adult Swim in a bidding war, as per The New York Times. With 11½ minutes for each TV episode — more than double the time of each webisode — Corddry felt there were limitations to his original rigid parody medical show concept. Inspired by shows likeMAS*HandSt. Elsewhere, they approachedChildrens Hospitalon Adult Swim with slightly broader ideas, choosing to parody general storytelling tropes as well as medical dramas.

“Eleven and a half minutes made us create the veneer of actual storylines and character growth without requiring that we be committed to that,” Corddry told The New York Times. And while there may not have been a strong commitment to storylines, continuity, or character growth, the team was always committed to the bit. For instance, the show takes place in Brazil. Why? Who cares! Is there any indication that it’s set in Brazil other than written canon? Of course not! But it remains a running gag throughout the show, which is littered with callbacks to its own elaborate lore.

Is There Space for ‘Childrens Hospital’ in 2025?

Like anything, comedy experiences trends. The 2000s saw commentary-focused clip shows likeThe SoupandTosh.0gain popularity. Meanwhile, in December 2024,The Hollywood Reporter published a piecetitled “TV’s Current Craze Is the Comedic Weepie,“pointing to dramedy showslikeSomebody SomewhereandA Man on the Inside. With surreal, over-the-top comedy series likeThe Eric Andre Show, Nathan For You, andBroad Citypremiering during the 2010s,Childrens Hospitalfit right in. It was new yet familiar. With faces that felt like home and a concept that felt like a breath of fresh air in a holier-than-thou television world,Childrens Hospitalwas in the right place at the right time.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Explained: Hit Medical Drama in 3 Minutes or Less

A drama centered on the personal and professional lives of five surgical interns and their supervisors.

The show being made in the 2010s also means it was a little more provocative than recent comedies. While there’s something forever funny about a pediatric doctor in John Wayne Gacy clown makeup who treats patients with “the healing power of laughter,” some viewers may find some material offensive. Whether jokes involving racial and religious stereotypes are uttered with confidence or sexual situations are happening in front of child patients,CHreally goes there. “We get away with a lot on Adult Swim,” Corddry told The New York Times.

Each episode certainly swings big, and the approach may feel jarring or uncomfortable to some. At the same time,The White LotusSeason 3features a brotherly incest storyline, so pushing limits isn’t exactly “out” in 2025; it’s just different. All in all,Childrens Hospitalis stupid, it’s smart, and it’s unabashedly raunchy. IsCHfor you? Admit yourself and find out.
