Robert Downey Jr., a two-time Academy Award nominee, has experienced both triumphs and setbacks in his career. His recent surge in demand can be largely attributed to his stellar portrayal of the billionaire superhero Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, in the immensely popular “Avengers” series.

Robert Downey Jr.

His initial Oscar nod arrived in 1992 when he earned a nomination for Best Actor, celebrated for his portrayal of the silent film icon Charles Chaplin inChaplin. It took 16 years for him to reenter the Oscar race, this time contending for Best Supporting Actor for his role as an Australian actor who undergoes a transformative surgery to assume the character of an African-American platoon leader inTropic Thunder(2008). Robert Downey Jr. as Charlie Chaplin

1Chaplin (1992)

In Richard Attenborough’s autobiographical drama,Robert Downey, Jr.delivers a hauntingly accurate portrayal of silent film icon Charles Chaplin. Not only does he bear a remarkable physical resemblance to the director and star of classics likeThe Gold RushandModern Times, but he also captures Chaplin’s carefree spirit and cunning charm that made him a global sensation.

The film delves deep into the well of sorrow that fueled Chaplin’s genius, from his mentally ill mother (played by Geraldine Chaplin, her own grandmother) to his nomadic upbringing in music halls and turbulent romances with much younger women. Downey, Jr. won a BAFTA and earned an Oscar nomination for this role, though Al Pacino won the Oscar that year forScent of a Woman.

2Oppenheimer (2023)

Upon fulfilling his Marvel commitment as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Downey embarked on a strikingly different career trajectory with his standout supporting role in Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed biopic,Oppenheimer. Throughout much of the three-hour film, Downey’s portrayal of Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Lewis Strauss seamlessly blends into Nolan’s ensemble of A-list actors.

However, in the climactic third act, Downey steps into the spotlight as Strauss, whose quest for a Cabinet position unveils him as a cunning manipulator willing to sabotage another’s career over a perceived slight. Downey delivers a raw and intense performance, revealing an aspect of his acting prowess rarely seen before, which is truly captivating.

3Tropic Thunder (2008)

Arguably, few film roles have been as daring as Kirk Lazarus, portrayed by Downey, Jr., inTropic Thunder.Directed by Ben Stiller, the movie revolves around a trio of self-absorbed actors – Tugg Speedman (Stiller), the five-time Oscar-winner Lazarus, and crude comedian Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black) – who become stranded in the jungle while shooting an extravagant Vietnam war film. Lazarus, a naturally blonde, blue-eyed Australian, undergoes skin-darkening surgery to depict the African-American platoon leader.

As an extreme method actor, he stays in character continuously, often convinced he is genuinely a black man. This portrayal could easily veer into awkward territory, but in Downey, Jr.’s capable hands, Lazarus becomes a satire of racial stereotypes and the egos of movie stars. He earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor, although Heath Ledger won forThe Dark Knight.

4Zodiac (2007)

David Fincher’sZodiacis a rare cinematic gem that adeptly juggles two distinct narratives. On one hand, it’s a compelling newspaper drama featuring a cartoonist (Jake Gyllenhaal) and a reporter (Downey, Jr.) consumed by the enigma of the Zodiac Killer, an unidentified assailant who terrorized Northern California in the late ’60s and early ’70s. On the other hand, it’s a meticulous police procedural chronicling the efforts of two San Francisco detectives (Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Edwards) on the killer’s trail.

These dual narratives coexist seamlessly, delivering a spine-chilling and captivating exploration of one of modern history’s most baffling unsolved mysteries. Downey, Jr.’s portrayal of Paul Avery, whose life unravels as he becomes a Zodiac target, stands as one of his finest performances. Remarkably,Zodiacreceived zero Oscar nominations, a fact that borders on criminal negligence.

5Sherlock Holmes (2009)

Downey, Jr.’s foray into franchise entertainment extends beyond the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In Guy Ritchie’sSherlock Holmes,he breathes new life into Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective for a contemporary audience. This iteration of Sherlock Holmes relies not only on his intellect but also on his physical prowess to solve mysteries, though his brilliance remains undiminished.

The story follows Holmes and his partner, Dr. Watson (Jude Law), as they thwart the sinister Lord Blackwood’s (Mark Strong) plan to seize control of London. The film dazzles with its extraordinary special effects and high-octane action sequences. Downey, Jr. clinched a Golden Globe for Best Comedy/Musical Actor and later reprised the role in the 2011 sequel,Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.
