It was like a breath of fresh air hearing that the Wayans brothers would be returning to theiconic movie parody franchise forScary Movie 6after being pushed out following the release of the second film. The IP is rightfully where it belongs now and as they prepare to get things started on the next sequel,Marlon Wayansis promising that it will be a return to form that fans will most definitely enjoy.
During a chat with PEOPLE, Wayans gave fans a little insight into what they can expect fromScary Movie 6. After the films took a creative detour following their departure, the comedian promised that they’re going back to the basics that made the original film such a comedic highlight. Wayans said, “We got the gloves off. We’re going R. We’re going to have the same fun and the same kind of tone and Wayans flavor that we gave on the first one.”

The First Two ‘Scary Movie’ Installments Remain the Best
TheScary Moviefranchise began in 2000, and it was a brilliant spoof on the genre that poked fun atScream,I Know What You Did Last Summer,The Sixth Sense, and more. Marlon and Shawn Wayans handled script duties on the first two films, while their brother, Keenen Ivory Wayans, helmed the first two installments. The first movie was a mega success and even though the second film dipped at the box office, it has remained a fan favorite years after its release. After the Wayans brothers were booted from the IP, the subsequent sequels went down a more commercial PG-13 route, and Marlon admits that’s when the franchise lost its way. TheWhite Chicksactor said that they were “missing that flavor” and that with the sixth film, “we’re bringing out Lowry’s and that Frank’s Hot Sauce” to give the franchise its spice again.
‘Scary Movie’ at 25: All 5 Entries, Ranked From Worst to Best
‘Scary Movie’ is now 25, and it still stands out as the best installment in the franchise. But how do the others measure up?
David Zucker, of Airplane fame, took over directing duties onScary Movie 3andScary Movie 4, which were financially successful but certainly lacked the edge that the Wayans brothers brought to the franchise. Marlon previously stated that they pitched an ideafor the third filmto the Weinsteins, who were running Dimension Films at the time, but they also wanted a new deal for more money. When the studio heads refused, the Wayans brothers took a step back but were shocked to later see that not only did the Weinsteins not move ahead with them, but they also used some of their ideas for the third film that Zucker directed.Scary Movie 5, the lowest-grossing installment of the bunch, was directed by Malcolm D. Lee.

Back in October, Marlon Wayans announced on Instagram that theScary Moviefranchisewas back with the familyas he posed alongside a picture of Ghostface from theirScary Moviefilms. Marlon wrote at the time, “WE’RE BACK!!! After nearly 20 years, the Wayans brothers are finally going to give the fans what they’ve been asking for…a return to theSCARY MOVIEfranchise!” It remains to be seen what movies the franchise will be parodying this time, but considering the popularity of the horror genre these days, there is plenty of material to work from.
