Oscar winner and major comic book fanNicolas Cagehas his sights set on joining another comic book movie franchise. This time, Cage wants to add his name to theBatmanrogue’s gallery, but his choice of villain might surprise you. Rather than The Scarecrow or Mr. Freeze, Cage wants to bring the obscure bad guy Egghead to the big screen.
“You know what I mean it’s like, Egghead is Vincent Price right? He’s one of our other great American superstar actors that I revere and had so much fun watching growing up. Theater of Blood. So I was watching the Batman show, because I really wanted to see what Vincent Price was going to do. And the character’s hilarious. I mean, everything starts with “Egg-cellent.” And it’s, “Egg-static.””
Appearing on the latest episode of theHappy Sad Confused podcast, Cage did clarify that he is not calling Warner Bros. Studios about bringing what would surely be a magnetic version of Egghead to the world ofThe Batman, but the suggestion alone is certainly an intriguing one.
“But I’m not calling Warner Bros.. This is just more of a fun little thing. Cause I’m on a red carpet, somebody asks me a question, I want to give them a funny answer. But there is an approach to that character that could be terrifying. And I’ve thought a lot about it. I’m not going to share it with you.”
Created and introduced in the 1960sBatmanseries starring Adam West, Egghead was portrayed by horror movie iconVincent Price. Known for his yellow-and-white costume and oversized, egg-shaped head, Egghead believed himself to be “the world’s smartest criminal,” with his crimes often involving egg-themed motifs, egg-based puns, and egg-shaped weapons. Clearly, his love for eggs has driven him insane.
This is not the first time that Cage has suggested the role of Egghead for himself, with the actor previously sounding much more eager to create a “terrifying” version of the character and face-off against Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight.
“I like… oh, here’s something, I’ve been thinking about this, because we have this new, Robert Pattinson as the Batman, which I haven’t seen it yet, but I think he would be terrific, the villain that Vincent Price played on the ’60s show, Egghead,” Cage said earlier this year. “I think I want to have a go at Egghead. I think I could make him absolutely terrifying. And I have a concept for Egghead. So let them know over at Warner Bros. I’m down for Egghead.”
If anyone can turn the ludicrous Egghead into a frightening presence worthy ofThe Batman 2, it’s Nic Cage.
The Batmandirector Matt Reeves is now working hard on writing the sequel alongside Mattson Tomlin. While there had been some concern for the follow-up amid the chaos at Warner Bros. Studios,The Batman 2has now been confirmed and will see Robert Pattinson return to the role of Bruce Wayne aka Batman.The Batman 2does not yet have a release date.
