The Horns of the South is in dire trouble inTainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon. It’s not only infested by the Wyrdness but various other creatures such as druids, Grindylow and Flamegobblers, just to name a few. In hopes of stomping out potential problems, Jann Heber has asked the protagonist to aid him in finding a way to make peace in the north. While the ritual ended up being a bust, maybe finding someone in the world with more knowledge would yield more positive results.

Accepting the Quest

Black Tar Prophecies is tied to another quest that is given to you by the same NPC: Jann Heber. Jann can be found in his workshop near the back of the Keep where you accept a quest from Keeper Lanzo, Pain Relief.

Enter his workshop, and you’ll be met by a scholarly man who you may ask, “Is there anything I can help you with?” This will set you on a path to do a quest for him regarding druids. He deciphered a text regarding a ritual performed at a stone circle, a place that can be found all the way to the north in the Horns of the South. After completing that quest, you will get a follow-up quest called Black Tar Prophecies.

This will be automatically put in your journal when turning in The Lenses and Eye of the Sage. You are tasked with finding someone who is knowledgeable about druidic magic.

Finding Drest

The man you are looking for is named Drest. Drest is a bit of a nomad and a bit of a coward based on his past. You can find him all the way to the south justoutside theKeep. You can jump out of the back of the Keep and maybe take a bit of fall damage, or scoot around the shoreline as he can be found on the beach.

Once you’ve talked to him, he will require a bit of food to keep his belly full. This will generally take two servings of whatever you have, be it Fish Fillet, Venison or a simple apple. After giving him a little food, he considers the food as payment for his services. He will then move to the north to the Cormlech in hopes of helping you with the ritual.

Unfortunately, he is met with a familiar face.

Choosing a Side

It would seem like Drest has had a colorful history that involves betrayal and death, with a young woman being turned into a magical being. Iona gives you the entire backstory and gives you two options: let her kill Drest or stand in her way.

Defending Drest

If you defend Drest, you will have to fight Iona. She doesn’t have too much HP, so it shouldn’t take long to dispose of her, and Drest will have his hands full with a mystical wolf. After killing Iona, she will dropDried Resin and Jade. You’ll need to talk to Drest, who wants to collect his thoughts and leaves.

Siding with Iona

If you decide to side with Iona, you don’t have to do anything. You simply have to confirm that you believe her and won’t interfere, and immediately after the dialogue she will kill Drest. Iona promises to keep the Cromlech safe. Looting Drest’s body will give you aDruid’s Talisman. While this seems like the better option, know that Drest is tied to a couple of other side quests, so having him die will leave these unsolved.

After everything, simply return to Jann Heber and claim your reward.
